'Happy Song' by Songbird (Nanna's old solo project) ca. 2009 Georgia (December 2012)
"We Bohemians love Of Monsters and Men. Out of the blue they started to follow us on Twitter, which was really exciting. Monsters are a well-known band and their music is played quite frequently at the Bohemian workshop. We got in touch with their production manager and arranged to meet with the band before their Atlanta, GA show at the Tabernacle so we could give them one of our top of the line Bohemian Guitars. They seemed to really like it at first sight and picked it up and started to play. It was still 3 hours until show time so we went our separate ways and would reenter the tabernacle with the commoners to watch Of Monsters play an incredible concert. The crowd was very engaged and it was an electric atmosphere. But this is only the beginning… Halfway through the show, our friend at Superfly received a text message stating Of Monsters decided they would play their new Bohemian on stage during their first encore!!! After checking our phone battery levels to make sure we had enough juice to film it, we ran up to the security guard (who at this point knew us from constant pestering) to let him know we would be frantically running up to the stage for the first encore and not to kick us out please. The last song of the set was played, lights went dim, and as the audience let their guards down and bent to pick a drink up and turned to talk to friends, Bohemians sprinted towards the stage and our Security Guard friend let us into the Media section so we could have a good view and camera shot…now we just needed them to really come out with our guitar in hand. And that’s just what they did. Sloom was the first encore and the guitarist smiled as he played his new toy. Other band members occasionally peered over his way, like a dog looking at another chewing on a different bone than the one he has…maybe thinking…hmmm…I may need to get me one of those…wonder what that one tastes like… Well, we thanked the production manager after the show for allowing us the opportunity and away we went. Emails were later exchanged and as it stands today we are fulfilling a request for five more Bohemian Guitars (including a bass and a left handed guitar) for the rest of the band!!! We can’t thank Of Monsters and Men and Jonti enough for their support and are thrilled for them to be playing and creating beautiful music with our instruments!" “There is plenty for me to do this week,” says trumpet player Ragnhildur Gunnarsdóttir. Ragnhildur has played 18 times since Iceland Airwaves began on Wednesday. She plays trumpet for bands Nora, Valdimar, Útidúr, Orphic Oxtra, and the very popular Of Monsters and Men. Ragnhildur’s schedule began on Tuesday with a concert with Útidúr in Kaffibarinn ('The Coffee Bar'), but when Fréttablaðið ('The Newspaper') reached out to her, she was standing in the eye of the tornado, so to speak. “This is really fun, but difficult- trumpet is not the easiest instrument to play a lot. I get tired when it’s busy, but it’s still fun.” Are your lungs expanded? “Sure, you could say that.” Do you need to have a special diet to get through these sessions? “No, I’m more trying to find time to eat. I've been running from place to place.” Ragnhildur has played the trumpet for twelve years (translator’s note: fourteen years as of 2013) starting when she was ten years old with annual jazz in FIH. She says the popularity of the trumpet seems to be increasing as there are several trumpet players at Iceland Airwaves. “There are trumpet players everywhere,” she says. “Playing the trumpet has finally become trendy. It wasn’t cool for about ten years, as it was seen as an instrument only played in marching band and stuff. Now one can play in a broader context.” to see the original Icelandic text click here Of Monsters and Men's latest song, 'Silhouettes,' is now available for individual purchase from The Hunger Games: Catching Fire soundtrack!

[The radio host has just finished playing a live version of Metallica‘s “Enter Sandman.”] Q: Nanna from of Monsters and Men is on the phone: How are you? Nanna: Hi, I‘m good. Q: Do you have any Metallica cassettes? N: Um, no…. (laughs) Q: You‘re not a fan? N: I’ve never gotten into Metallica. Q: Never? N: No… Q: You didn’t even practice playing Nothing Else Matters when you were learning how to play guitar? N: No (laughs). I never got into Metallica. When they played here, I didn’t go. Maybe I missed out. [Translator note: Metallica still holds the record for the largest paying audience in Icelandic music history.] Q: What were you doing that night, do you remember? N: Oh my god, no…I have no idea. Q: You had no interest. N: No… Q: That‘s alright. But you‘re in Iceland, as well as the whole band? N: Yes, except one is in Denmark. Q: Are you going to watch the national team later? [Translator note: Iceland and Croatia played the first leg of the play off to reach the men‘s soccer World Cup finals later that day.] N: Yes, of course…one has to do that, right? Q: Yes, we have to…of course nobody should be forced to, but I think it will be fun. Do you know where you will watch and with whom? N: I think I‘ll go to my dad‘s place. Q: Does he like soccer? N: No, he‘s more of a car guy. Q: Sorry, what? N: He likes cars. Q: Oh, he‘s a car guy. Is he always in the garage? N: Yes, he‘s always fixing up cars. Q: Does he smoke a pipe? N: No (laughs). Is that something car guys do? Q: Some of them do. Smoke a pipe and listen to country music. N: I have to tell him about that. Q: No, I‘m not recommending it….but he is not a big soccer fan. N: No, but even if we‘re not crazy soccer fans, this is something that everybody can rally around. Q: That‘s correct…Nanna, I didn’t call you discuss this, but rather because I‘m about to play your new song, Silhouettes, from The Hunger Games. There are many great bands on that soundtrack. Like with the first movie, isn’t it the case that there is a lot of work that goes into finding the right music? N: What they do is that they get in touch with bands that they want to be a part of a soundtrack CD. Q: And are all the songs written specifically for the movie? N: I think so. These are all songs that have not been released elsewhere. Q: And they need to fit the movie. N: Yeah, probably. But we didn’t really originally write our song with that in mind. We had written a song, and then realized that it was a good fit. Q: And the story, what are you singing about? N: This is the first song we have written and finished since we released our first album. We wrote it about being on tour and being away, about sitting in a hotel room and wanting to go home. Q: So it‘s about being homesick? N: Yes, being homesick. Q: Let‘s hear the song. Thanks for the chat, and say hi to your dad. N: I will tell him that. Q: And have fun. N: Thank you, you too. Q: So, you’re here for Iceland Airwaves; you’re not playing this year, are you? Brynjar: No, we’re taking the year off. Nanna: Yep. Q: You are here as music fans? N: Yes, finally we’re able to relax, walk around, and take a look at other bands, which is great. Q: Isn’t it nice to be able to do that for a change, after such a long tour? B: It’s very pleasant. Q: What have you seen tonight? N: I saw Vök and Lay Low. Earlier today I went off-venue and saw Sykur, and I stood outside of 12 Tónar and watched Rökkurró. That was fun. Q: It’s okay to stand in line… N: Yeah, that’s part of the experience. B: It’s good for you. Q: But isn’t it strange that you’re not playing? You were the headliners last year. N: Yes, it’s weird. B: It’s strange not having to go to sound check or having to do something, we’re just chilling. N: There’s no stress. It’s wicked nice. Q: So you’re just sipping red wine and relaxing? B: Yes, mostly (both laugh). Q: What is that you have to see, can’t miss this year? N: I cannot miss Mammút, who will be playing later. I´m very excited. B: I’m going to see Midlake on Saturday, and Yo La Tengo and Kraftwerk on Sunday. Q: Will you play here next year? N: Hopefully. I always really enjoy playing at Airwaves. We have strong ties to this festival and it would be fun…when we have new material. Q: It’s a shame that you’re sitting on the sidelines rather than playing for the people. N: Yeah, I know, this is incredibly lame (laughs). B: We’ll see how far we’ve gotten with our new material next year. You never know what might happen, maybe we’ll play. Q: Have fun being in the audience at Airwaves. B: Thanks, you too. N: Thanks. *translated by fuckyeahofmonstersandmen |
